Cyrano is a brave, witty, arrogant swashbuckler known for his exceptionally large nose. He loves Roxane, but is unable to tell her because of his insecurity created by his appearance. He joins forces with another who is in love with Roxane, a handsome soldier named Christian. They work together to become the perfect man with Christian's looks and Cyrano's romantic intellect. With the help of Cyrano's love letters, Christian marries Roxane. Then immediately after, both Cyrano and Christian are called off to war. Cyrano promises Roxane that Christian will write everyday. As the war drags on, Roxane becomes impatient and goes to the battle scene to find her love. Here it is made known that Cyrano was the one writing the letters all along and she is in love with both men. Tragically, Cryano dies by dropping a log on his head and he never fully receives the love he longs for.
     At the beginning of the play it is evident that Cyrano is brave, heroic, and confident. However, one sees his true feelings when Roxane arrives. His pride fades to insecurity. He confides to his friend Le Bret about his love saying, "My old friend - look at me/ and tell me how much hope remains for me/ with this protuberance!" (41). He reveals his lack of hope that anyone could ever love him. When he meets Christian and decides to write love letters to Roxane for him, Cyrano becomes the soul of the man that Roxane loves. Cyrano whisper words to Christian during the balcony scene saying, "No - no- / not any more - I love you...evermore.../ and ever...more and more!" (105). Christian plays the role of the body while Cyrano is the soul behind it. Due to his inability to fully encompass the "perfect" man, Cyrano dies both a winner and a loser. He loved and was loved in return by Roxane, but never fully experienced love.
